The
Wirral Model Boat Club
The
club was formed by a group of like minded modellers in 1981
and they set up a lease agreement with the council to use part
of the lake in Ashton Park for their sailing activities. From small beginnings the club has grown
considerably over the 27 years and the activities on the lake
bring great pleasure to the members and the visiting public.
The
models vary from radio controlled yachts through scale models
of cabin cruisers, warships including submarines and impressive
aircraft carriers to tugs and other assorted vessels. On competition
days courses are laid out to represent buoyed channels and dock
systems. We have even had icebergs with Eskimos and seals basking
in the sunlight and tropical islands with working volcanoes.
The
club has over the years helped to raise funds for the R.N.L.I.,
Claire House and other good causes.
Our
display teams have appeared at the International Festival of
the Sea in Portsmouth, Great
Yarmouth Maritime Festival and Swansea International Marine
Model Festival and over many years at The Ellesmere Port Model
Boat Convention.
The
tug towing teams appear in venues as far apart as Southend in
Essex and Greenock in bonny Scotland
and presently are the British Champions in two and three man
team towing.
The
main aim of the club is and always has been to encourage others
to enjoy the pastime, be it the pleasure of building and sailing
the models or just standing in the wonderful surroundings of
the park talking about boats and ships in general.
